Understanding the Atlantic is

The Ocean Observation System for the Santos Basin Project, also known as the AZUL Project, began at the end of July 2012. Among some specific goals and contributions, the project's main objective is to develop an ocean observation system for the Santos Basin region based on the application of ocean computational modeling techniques and the acquisition of real-time oceanographic data in the region of interest. This data will be acquired from an innovative collection program to be applied continuously and systematically in the Santos Basin using local sensors (drifters, floats and gliders) and remote sensors on board platforms.

About the project

The AZUL Project - Ocean Observation System Project for the Santos Basin, requested by Shell and started in July 2012, has the main objective of developing an ocean observation system (SOO) for the Santos Basin region based on the application of ocean computational modeling techniques and the acquisition of oceanographic data in real-time. This data will be acquired from an innovative collection program to be applied continuously and systematically in the Santos Basin using local sensors (surface drifters, profilers and gliders) and remote sensors on board orbital platforms.

Project AZUL's methodology
is based on the interaction of three
main areas of activity:

Ocean computational modeling;

Collecting oceanographic data;

Dissemination of the information generated.

These areas work together to develop a system for assimilating the data collected in the Santos Basin, which is fundamental for the implementation of a SOO that provides not only diagnostic but also prognostic information on ocean dynamics.

Main objectives of the AZUL project
The project will be implemented by professionals from the oceanographic consulting company PROOCEANO, which is responsible, among other activities, for the entire launch and operation of the sensors at sea, and by the LAMCE Laboratory, through the Environmental Modeling Core (NUMA).

LAMCE’s role

LAMCE's team of researchers is basically responsible for the entire area of research related to the implementation and execution of the computational ocean model to be used for the construction of the ocean observation system for the Santos Basin. Implementing an ocean computer model in an operational way for a given region involves research and development in other specific areas of knowledge that are fundamental to the correct implementation of the model. Therefore, the LAMCE group of researchers has been subdivided into five research groups:

Ocean modeling;
Oceanographic data analysis;
Oceanographic data assimilation;
Atmospheric modeling;
Remote Sensing.

03/04/2013 - Launch of the first glider to collect data for Project AZUL. Most of the LAMCE team was present.
